Not much, but a lot of gay sex going on. 5000 sailors go to sea and 2500 couples return. Oh and to rag on my own service, USMC, why does the Navy have Marines aboard their ships? Sheep would be too obvious.

US Navy?

Booze is not allowed on board so if you get caught with it, you are in trouble even if you do not drink it.

You also work long hard hours and when you are off duty you have little time to “party.” For most guys it is a shower, shave, some food, maybe a little study for college degree and bed.

If “everybody has seen it done” perhaps you can supply some specific information as to time, date and name of ship.

Not sure about today—-but in the day a night time hot toddy really hit the spot. Some guys even had stills hidden away in the depth of the ship. Most of the this was over looked by the command. Today’s Navy is much different and really doesn’t tolerate alcohol abuse at all——-

You just have to fit two months or so worth of drinking into a one or two night port call.

This is the inherent advantage of the Coast Guard–never stray too far from your source of alcohol

When I was a young sailor my LPO used to drink Listerine mixed with 7-up. The Listerine is 52 proof. He used to keep a dozen big bottles in his rack. I never saw a drop of real booze.

About the same time (mid 1970’s) I’d guess that 75% of the guys E-1 to E-5 were stonners. They used to smoke weed all the time out at sea. A few used to drop acid too.

I knew guys who went to Captain’s Mast a dozen times for drug use.

After the serious crash on the Nimitz’s flight deck where about a dozen sailors were killed they did an autopsy on each of the sailors and found most were stonned. Reagan was in office and there was a huge, massive crack-down on this kind of activity.

The last 10 years of my career (1985-1995) I don’t think I saw more than 8 or 10 cases of drug use.

My father is a retired Chief, served 24 years…and my stepmother is still in the Navy going on 19 years.
I’ve never heard of drugs period, and the only party I’ve ever heard of was when a salior becomes a Chief…they make them play games and eat weird food and crap…but that hardly comes close to even a regular saturday night here at home!
When their out to see, their work days are alot longer…I’ve ever heard any of my parents have time for anything like that!

So to sum up: I would say virtually none
