Why should we fight drug abuse and how should we go about it?
I have an interview coming up for a fellowship with the state senate and they are supposedly going to ask me about a range of political issues. This is one issue I’m not particularly educated on. I do think we should fight drug abuse though.

I think the “why” isn’t that hard – drugs are harmful to the body, and can cause injury to people who aren’t taking the drugs (like running over someone while high, for example). The “how” is much harder. There are two approaches, which basically seem like opposite ends of the spectrum. The first approach is to toughen drug penalties. The theory behind this is that people will stay up locked behind bars longer, so they won’t be abusing drugs, and that if the penalties are high enough, people will be afraid of them and stop using drugs. The other approach is to increase the number of rehabilitation programs, and possibly loosen drug penalties so that, instead of serving jail time, the offenders go to the program instead. Whichever approach seems to work is your personal opinion.
